Security assesment by Indina expert before Cricket match in Pakistan.

India is sending its security teams to Pakistan for an on-yhe-spot assessment before deciding whether to go ahead with the cricket series in Pakistan in January. The decision between BCCI and PCB has to be finalised in the next two weeks, but it's unlikely that the series will be allowed to be played in Pakistan.

"The risk is not worth it," said government sources. The internal security situation in Pakistan is very grim and security agencies within India are wary of taking the risk. India will have a very low terror tolerance threshold for cricket and is not cricketers to jihadi misadventures.

Government sources said that if any of the cricketers, particularly those like Sachin Tendulkar, suffered even so much as a scratch, it would turn the people of India decisively against Pakistan. On the foreign policy side, it could deeply jeopardise the peace process wih Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Pakistan PM Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday went on record to say that he would personally assure PM Man-mohan Singh of the security of the series. Agencies quoted Zahid Basheer, Gilani's press secretary, as saying, "The Prime Minister met Pakistan Cricket Board(PCB) official on Thursday afternoon and has assured that every step will be taken to ensure that Indian team tours Pakistan as schedule. The PM has assured that he will talk to the Indian prime minister on this matter."

However, informally, Pakistan officials too are aware of the risksinvilved in having an India-Pakistan series when jihadi fires are raging. The new PCB chief Ijaz Butt reportedly met Indian high commissioner Satyabrata Pal on Wednesday to carry a similar message.

This year has not been good for Pakistani cricket lovers, as team after team have refused to play in the country on security grounds. Australia put off their trip and the ICC's Champions Trophy could not be held in Pakistan either. Pakistan recently played a One-day series with West Indies in Abu Dhabi. It is likely that the Indian trip could also end up there, or even shift to India.
